42,000 Pounds Of Metal Stolen From Milwaukee Scrap Yard

Metal Suppose To Be Driven To Ohio, But Never Arrived

MILWAUKEE -- Milwaukee police said they have few clues as to who took 42,000 pounds metal from a Milwaukee scrap yard.

A transporter was supposed to pick the load up at 30th Street and Concordia and drive it to Cleveland. When it failed to arrive in Ohio, the workers at United Milwaukee Scrap learned they'd been scammed.

United Milwaukee Scrap buys, sells and brokers metal. Last month, the company needed to move a tractor-trailer load of brass, so it contacted a trucking brokerage company that put the job out to bid.

United Milwaukee Scrap's owners declined to say much to 12 News reporter Colleen Henry, other than that Milwaukee police, the FBI and their insurance companies are all investigating, but court records said the thief provided all the necessary paperwork to get the job -- a license, tax papers and insurance.

The thief spent four hours there loading the metal onto his truck.

Police were left with few clues except for the phone numbers used to contact the driver. Police have subpoenaed those phone records.

Meanwhile, the organization of scrap recyclers has posted a national theft alert warning members to look out for the stolen brass.

Metal has been a hot commodity among thieves, but prices have started to drop.

Last year, the value of the stolen brass would have been about $150,000. The owners said the street value now is down to about $75,000.
